Privacy, security, and ethics are fundamental considerations when using data in research and practice. Indeed, ever more data enables dramatic leaps in our ability to extract a person from signals at the expense of privacy: people’s ability to control their own conception and its expression. This dilemma is further fuelled by ever growing concerns on cyber security, and the variance in moral principles that govern the generation, access, use, and sharing of data. This workshop explains and organises key concepts for responsible data management and provides a range of recommendations and resources that help you navigate challenging data territory.

Bioinformatics is one of the main tools of biology, but the required skills are hard to learn. Often it's even hard to know where to start learning! In this small workshop we'll show you how to analyse a small genomics dataset from start to finish on the command line. We'll touch on the various small tools experienced bioinformaticians employ, hopefully giving you a starting point for your learning journey. This workshop will not be interactive, but we welcome chances for digressions. We don't expect any prerequisite knowledge.
NB: Session runs parallel with Help! My laptop is Burning! Deciding When to Move Off of Your Laptop, NVIVO Part 1, and Make Your Data FAIR
How do you know when your dataset becomes “too big”? How do you know when your laptop can no longer do what you need it to do for your research? When is it best to use cloud resources? When is it best to use supercomputing resources? When do I need both (or neither)?
The answers to these questions are project-dependent, and each project is different… but there are guidelines and best practices to help you decide.
During this interactive session, we will seek to answer these and associated questions. We'll hear real stories from individuals who have had to navigate these same questions and who will be on hand to facilitate discussion, based on years of experience working with early, mid and late career researchers.

This workshop will take you through setting up a project in the qualitative software NVivo. In particular it covers how to import different types of materials into a project, including Word, PDF, audio, video and picture files saved on your computer; survey data; web content; emails; and references and PDFs from EndNote. It also covers how to store information about the cases and files in your project as case and file classifications
NB: Session runs parallel with Help! My laptop is Burning! Deciding When to Move Off of Your Laptop, Make Your Data Fair and Bioinformatics
This workshop provides an introduction to organising and analysing qualitative data using NVivo. In particular, it covers how to organise project materials together according to specific themes and topics through the process of coding; how to use mind maps to visualise the layout of codes; and how to conduct searches and create graphs, including by making use of attributes of case and file classifications.
NB: Session runs parallel with Introduction to Qualtrics and Meet Pawsey & Pawsey-Curtin Researchers
What does a good data management strategy look like? Have you heard of the FAIR principles? Applying the FAIR principles to your research data management practice has many benefits, including increase visibility and citation of your research, attract new partnerships and collaborations, and improve reproducibility and reliability of your research. Come along to this workshop to learn about the FAIR principles, assess how FAIR your data is and identify practical steps to make your data more FAIR.

Did you know that Setonix - the only Quokka-inspired supercomputer on the planet - computes just down the road from where you study? How, why, and when might you use the Pawsey resources, including Setonix? What types of research/science - right here at Curtin - is being done at Pawsey? Join Curtin Researchers and Pawsey Supercomputing Specialists to answer these - and your - questions. The presenters will also talk about their journeys toward supercomputing, and their decision points along the way. When you attend, don't forget to enter our prize draw!
NB: Session runs parallel with Introduction to Qualtrics and NVIVO Part 2
Are you conducting research that requires participant recruitment? Conducting a survey or experimental research online? Then Qualtrics might be the platform for you. Qualtrics is an online survey software that can handle everything from simple questionnaires to detailed research projects. Design your survey with their intuitive drag-and-drop survey tool, powerful logic, and 100+ question types. This session is aimed at those who are new to using online survey platforms (or would like a refresher). Content covers creating a survey, selecting and setting up the most common question types, survey development (including survey flow and logic functions), and how to set up your data for export to excel and SPSS.

Learning a new programming language can be a substantial time investment. Given the emergence of different programming languages, it is often difficult to decide if learning a new language is worth the time investment. The aim of this talk is to share my experience in learning and using Julia for research from a practical perspective. The talk will cover some of the useful features and annoyances of Julia as well as their relations to other languages such as Python and R.

Although data science applications are initiated to deliver value from data, many fail because they are deployed as time-bound technical projects rather than as part of an integrated business process. It is important to focus on not only organisational routines and standardised workflows, but also collaborative team process achieved by people with appropriate skills. This session will cover people skills, communications, and new ways of working in data science innovations, with a case study of machine learning model application in a mining operation context.
